Moving your license to a new computer

GCnester · 4 steps · Published September 2026

Seats float: a seat is used only while GCnester is running, and it frees up when you close the program. So moving to a new computer is mostly just installing there and entering your key. This guide covers that, what happens to the old computer, and how to free a seat by hand when a machine dies with the program open.

01
Close GCnester on the old computer

That is usually all it takes: closing the program returns its seat. If the old computer is gone, or it died with GCnester open, its seat frees itself after about half an hour, or you can free it now: log in to gc-cad.com, open Account, then License, and click Deactivate next to that computer. You don't need the old computer for any of this.

02
Install and enter the key on the new computer

Install GCnester on the new machine and enter the same key. It needs an internet connection and a seat that isn't in use at that moment. Entering the key doesn't start a new subscription and doesn't restart a demo's ten days. You can leave it installed on both computers; the seat simply follows whichever one is running.

03
Move your files yourself

Deactivating doesn't uninstall anything, delete files, or carry anything across. Copy your saved jobs and parts yourself. If you customised settings, cut charts, posts or inventory, find the shop-data folder your installation uses (by default under ProgramData in the GCmaker folder) and back it up. Restoring that folder onto another installation isn't a tested procedure, so ask support before copying a whole folder over a machine that already has its own setup. Copying license files won't transfer an activation.

04
What the old machine sees

If you deactivated it from the website, the old computer is refused the next time it checks in; that isn't pushed to it instantly. While it runs, GCnester checks in with the server every few minutes to keep its seat. If every seat is taken when it tries, it tells you and stops after a short warning so you can save. A copy that started offline holds no seat on the server; it runs on its signed offline allowance instead.

Questions people ask

Usually not. Closing GCnester frees the seat. Deactivate from the License page when a computer is gone or when you want to be sure its seat is free right now.
